Whether you are learning Mandarin as a child or an adult, internationally recognised Chinese language qualifications provide an excellent way to measure your progress and celebrate your achievements.
At Hua Hsia Chinese School, we prepare students for both the Youth Chinese Test (YCT) and the Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) examinations, helping learners build confidence while working towards globally recognised Mandarin qualifications.
Our experienced teachers provide structured preparation throughout our children’s and adult programmes, ensuring students develop the language skills, exam techniques and confidence needed to achieve their full potential.
The HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) and YCT (Youth Chinese Test) are internationally recognised Mandarin Chinese proficiency examinations designed for non-native speakers.
Both qualifications assess a student’s ability to understand and use Mandarin in real-life situations and are recognised by educational institutions, employers and organisations around the world. The HSK is widely used as evidence of Chinese language proficiency for university applications, scholarships and professional opportunities, while the YCT provides younger learners with an age-appropriate introduction to formal language assessment.
At Hua Hsia Chinese School, we prepare students for both qualification pathways as part of our structured Mandarin learning programmes.
International Mandarin Qualifications for Children
The Youth Chinese Test (YCT) is an international Mandarin qualification designed specifically for children and teenagers learning Chinese as a second language.
Unlike adult examinations, the YCT has been developed to suit younger learners, assessing their ability to use Mandarin in everyday and educational situations through engaging, age-appropriate tasks.
The written YCT consists of four levels:
Students may also choose to take separate YCT Speaking examinations at Beginner and Intermediate levels.
For many children, YCT examinations provide an excellent introduction to formal language qualifications while building confidence and motivation throughout their Mandarin learning journey.
International Mandarin Qualifications for Teenagers and Adults
The HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) is the world’s most widely recognised Chinese language proficiency examination for non-native speakers.
The qualification measures practical Mandarin ability across listening, reading and (depending on level) writing, with higher levels demonstrating increasingly advanced communication skills. HSK results are recognised internationally by universities, employers and scholarship providers, and are commonly used to demonstrate Mandarin proficiency for study or work.
Hua Hsia prepares students for:
Students normally progress through the levels as their language skills develop, allowing them to build confidence and gain recognised qualifications throughout their Mandarin learning journey.
Preparing for a Mandarin examination involves much more than memorising vocabulary.
Throughout our children’s and adult programmes, students steadily develop the listening, speaking, reading and writing skills required for success in YCT and HSK examinations through carefully structured lessons, regular homework and ongoing teacher feedback.
As examinations approach, teachers also provide targeted preparation, helping students become familiar with exam formats, question styles and effective examination techniques.
This balanced approach enables students to develop genuine language ability while building the confidence needed to perform well under examination conditions.

Our experienced teachers can recommend the most appropriate qualification based on a student’s age, experience and current Mandarin level.
Taking an internationally recognised Mandarin examination offers many benefits:
For many students, these qualifications become important milestones throughout their Mandarin learning journey.
Hua Hsia Chinese School offers paper-based YCT and HSK examinations.
Registration normally closes one month before each examination date, and places may be limited, so early registration is recommended. Once your application and payment have been received, confirmation of your examination time and venue will be provided before the test.
If you are unsure which examination level is most suitable, our teaching team will be happy to provide guidance before you register.
Yes. Hanban (now the Centre for Language Education and Cooperation) has introduced a new three-stage HSK proficiency framework, expanding the qualification from six levels to nine levels. The new framework is designed to provide a more detailed measure of Mandarin proficiency and better align with international language standards.
However, the transition is being introduced gradually around the world. Many authorised HSK test centres continue to offer the familiar HSK Levels 1–6, while the newer examination structure is rolled out over time. Availability can therefore vary depending on the test centre and examination location.
At Hua Hsia Chinese School, we closely monitor developments to ensure our students are prepared for the most appropriate examination. Whether you are studying for the current HSK Levels 1–6 or preparing for future changes to the qualification, our experienced teachers will provide guidance on the most suitable pathway and ensure your learning remains aligned with the latest examination requirements.
This is a question that comes up a lot, and the honest answer is that there is no official equivalence between HSK and UK qualifications like GCSE or A Level. They test different things:
That said, based on vocabulary, grammar, reading ability and the level of language expected, the following comparison is widely accepted by Mandarin teachers.
| Qualification | Approximate UK Equivalent | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| HSK 3 | GCSE Foundation to lower GCSE Higher | Around 600 vocabulary words. Students can handle everyday conversations, simple reading and short pieces of writing. |
| HSK 4 | Good GCSE Higher / approaching AS Level | Around 1,200 vocabulary words. Students can discuss familiar topics in greater detail and read longer passages. |
| HSK 5 | Strong A Level standard (or slightly beyond in reading) | Around 2,500 vocabulary words. Students can read newspapers, books and authentic materials, and discuss a wide range of topics. |
| HSK 6 | Beyond A Level | Advanced fluency suitable for university study and professional communication. |
A student achieving a high grade (7–9) in Edexcel GCSE Mandarin will generally have language ability somewhere between HSK 3 and HSK 4.
However:
A Level is more challenging because students are expected to:
In terms of language proficiency:
Again, the exams have different objectives, so neither qualification is a direct substitute for the other.
