Heritage Classes

Specialist Mandarin Classes for Children from Mandarin-Speaking Families

Hua Hsia Chinese School’s Heritage Programme is designed specifically for children from Mandarin-speaking backgrounds. Many of our students come from homes where Mandarin is spoken by one or both parents, while others have previously attended school overseas in countries and regions such as China, Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong and Malaysia before continuing their education in the UK.

Our Heritage pathway is designed to help bilingual children maintain, strengthen and deepen their Mandarin skills through a carefully structured programme that places particular emphasis on literacy, reading comprehension and character writing.

With over twenty years of experience teaching Mandarin in North West London, Hua Hsia provides a specialist environment where heritage learners are appropriately challenged and supported to reach their full potential.

A Structured Heritage Pathway from Ages 4–11

Our Heritage programme consists of progressive stages:

  • Heritage Beginners (ages 4–6)
  • Heritage 1 (ages 5–6)
  • Heritage 2 (ages 6–7)
  • Heritage 3 (ages 7–8)
  • Heritage 4 (ages 8–9)
  • Heritage 5 (ages 9–10)
  • Heritage 6 (ages 10–11)

Each stage builds upon the previous one, developing students from early character recognition and simple sentence construction to reading, writing and understanding increasingly sophisticated texts and paragraphs.

Age ranges provide rough guidance where a new student might be placed, but we take into consideration their current level through assessment and looking at past materials they have used and examples of their work.

The programme provides a strong foundation for later progression into our GCSE Mandarin pathway and beyond.

Full Mandarin Immersion

All Heritage classes are conducted exclusively in Mandarin.

Teachers communicate and teach entirely in Mandarin, creating a natural and immersive environment that strengthens listening comprehension, speaking confidence and cultural understanding.

For children growing up in the UK, this immersion helps maintain a strong connection to their heritage language and culture while supporting the development of fluent and confident communication skills.

A Teaching Approach Designed Specifically for Heritage Learners

Our Heritage Programme is designed specifically for children who already have exposure to Mandarin through their family, community or previous education.

In Heritage Beginners, students use the same textbooks and workbooks as the equivalent non-heritage classes, but lessons are taught using a different methodology that reflects the stronger listening and speaking abilities of heritage learners. Greater emphasis is placed on character recognition, reading comprehension and character writing, allowing students to progress at a faster pace.

From Heritage 1 onwards, students follow a dedicated heritage curriculum using specialist teaching materials designed specifically for Mandarin-speaking children. This enables teachers to challenge students appropriately and develop higher levels of literacy than would typically be possible in a non-heritage classroom.

Many heritage learners already possess strong oral language skills and therefore benefit from a more academically demanding approach. Lessons place particular emphasis on:

  • Character recognition and writing
  • Reading comprehension
  • Vocabulary expansion
  • Sentence structure and grammar
  • Dictation and handwriting accuracy
  • Independent learning habits
  • Written communication
  • Developing confidence in either traditional or simplified Chinese characters

Students progress through the curriculum at a significantly faster pace than their non-heritage peers, with higher expectations for homework, independent study and written work.

This specialist approach allows heritage learners to build upon their existing language foundation and develop the advanced literacy skills required for long-term academic success, future examinations and confident use of Chinese in both educational and real-world settings.

High Expectations in a Fun and Supportive Environment

At Hua Hsia Chinese School, we believe that young children learn best when they are engaged, happy and inspired.

Although the Heritage programme is academically more demanding than our non-heritage pathway, lessons remain lively, interactive and age-appropriate.

For younger students, learning takes place through:

  • Stories and picture books
  • Songs and nursery rhymes
  • Games and role play
  • Arts and crafts
  • Group activities and discussion
  • Interactive classroom tasks

As students become older, increasing emphasis is placed on reading comprehension, written expression, grammar and character writing, while maintaining an enjoyable and supportive classroom environment.

Our goal is not simply to teach Chinese, but to foster a lifelong love of the language and culture.

Developing Strong Literacy Skills

One of the defining features of the Heritage programme is its focus on literacy.

Students gradually develop the ability to:

  • Recognise and write Chinese characters confidently
  • Read increasingly complex texts
  • Understand sentence structure and grammar
  • Write sentences and paragraphs accurately
  • Transition away from reliance on pinyin
  • Build confidence in all four language skills

As students progress through Heritage 5 & 6, they begin reading and writing multiple sentences and paragraphs independently, establishing strong foundations for future GCSE study.

Supporting Traditional and Simplified Characters

Hua Hsia Chinese School welcomes students from both traditional and simplified character backgrounds.

With increasing numbers of students from Taiwan, Hong Kong and other traditional character backgrounds, dedicated support is available to ensure students continue to develop literacy using the writing system most familiar to them.

This flexibility enables children from diverse Mandarin-speaking backgrounds to flourish within the same supportive community.

Small Classes and Personalised Teaching

Every child arrives with a different experience of Mandarin.

Some speak fluently but have limited reading skills. Others have attended school abroad and require support transitioning to the UK education system. Some may understand Mandarin well but feel less confident speaking.

Our small class sizes allow teachers to understand each student’s strengths and provide individual support and challenge.

By combining high expectations with personalised teaching, we help every child develop confidence and achieve their full potential.

Join Our Heritage Mandarin Classes in Hampstead

If you are looking for Heritage Mandarin Chinese classes in Hampstead or North West London for children from Mandarin-speaking families, Hua Hsia Chinese School offers a specialist pathway designed specifically for heritage learners.

From early years through to advanced primary levels, our Heritage programme combines academic excellence, full Mandarin immersion and a strong focus on literacy to help every child thrive.

The Heritage pathway is generally suitable for children who regularly hear or speak Mandarin at home, or who have previously received education in Mandarin. Children with little or no exposure to Mandarin are usually better suited to our non-Heritage classes. Our teaching team can assess your child’s language background and recommend the most appropriate class.

Yes. Heritage students typically have stronger listening and speaking abilities and therefore follow a more academically demanding pathway. Lessons place greater emphasis on character recognition, reading comprehension, writing and literacy development. Students also progress through the curriculum more quickly and are expected to complete more challenging homework.

Yes. This is a common situation for children growing up in bilingual households. Our Heritage pathway is specifically designed to help students bridge the gap between spoken Mandarin and literacy, gradually developing confidence in reading and writing Chinese characters.

Homework forms an important part of the Heritage programme and helps reinforce learning between lessons. Expectations increase as students move through the levels, supporting the development of independent study habits and strong literacy skills. Parents should expect Heritage students to complete more written work than students in the equivalent non-Heritage classes.

We welcome students from both traditional and simplified character backgrounds. Our teachers are experienced in supporting learners from a variety of educational backgrounds and can advise families on the most appropriate pathway for their child.

Yes. The Heritage programme develops the strong literacy, reading and writing skills needed for success in GCSE Mandarin. Students who complete the Heritage pathway are well prepared to progress into our GCSE classes and continue their Chinese language education at a higher level.

Many of our students join Hua Hsia after attending schools in China, Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong or other international settings. Our teachers have extensive experience supporting children from different educational backgrounds and will recommend the most suitable class level to ensure a smooth transition.

Regular exposure to Mandarin outside the classroom can make a significant difference to a child’s progress. Simple activities such as reading Chinese books together, listening to Mandarin stories, watching age-appropriate Chinese programmes or encouraging everyday conversations in Mandarin can help reinforce classroom learning and build confidence.

Yes. Many heritage learners develop strong speaking skills before they develop equivalent literacy skills. Our programme is specifically designed to challenge fluent speakers by focusing on reading comprehension, character writing, vocabulary development and written expression, helping them achieve a higher level of overall language proficiency.

While many children can communicate comfortably in spoken Mandarin, literacy skills require dedicated study and practice. Developing the ability to read and write Chinese characters allows students to access a much wider range of literature, culture and educational opportunities while strengthening their long-term connection to the language.

Where places are available, students may be able to join during the academic year. Our teachers will assess each child’s background and current level to determine the most appropriate class and ensure they can integrate successfully into the programme.

Research consistently shows that bilingual children can benefit from enhanced communication skills, greater cultural awareness and increased cognitive flexibility. Maintaining Mandarin alongside English can provide valuable advantages throughout a child’s educational journey and future career.

Heritage classes take place on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00am – 11:50am at our Hampstead Branch, NW3 5SQ.

Heritage Beginners uses Living Mandarin K1 – K3 text and workbook, while the rest of the Heritage classes use the Chinese Made Easy for Kids book series.
